Public Holiday - Svetitskhovloba

Today Georgia celebrates Svetitskhovloba (Mtskhetoba), an annual holiday dedicated to the Svetitskhoveli cathedral and the town of Mtskheta.

Svetitskhoveli is one of the largest historical church buildings in Georgia to date. It is located in the city of Mtskheta, about 20 kilometers from Tbilisi. It is believed that the place of construction of the church was indicated by St. Nino herself. Its construction took place in 1010-1029, under the leadership of architect Arsukidze.

Although Svetitskhoveli has been rebuilt many times, it has not lost its magnificence.

Svetitskhovloba became an official holiday after Georgia gained independence in 1991.
