New year in Pshavi

New year in Pshavi

Previously, the New Year in Pshavi was called "Tseltsadi" and locals were exceptionally preparing for it. Agreeing beforehand with "Mekvle", the first person who enters the house on New Year’s Day, he/she should have arrived early in the morning to "bring the first foot" and wish the family health and happiness. On "Tseltsad Morning", fortune cakes (bread rolls) were baked for each member, decorated with prayers and wishes, and one especially large bread roll, called "Goga". As soon as the hostess woke up, she would feed all the family members with honey and bless them: "May your aging be this sweet!". When Mekvle arrived, he/she would grab "Goga" and roll it three times with his/her right hand towards the fireplace. If it fell on the top three times in a row, then the family would have a blessed year.
