Mount Kazbegi is associated with many ancient legends. At an altitude of about 4,000 meters, inside the 80-meter rock wall there the cave of Bethlehem. According to The Georgian Chronicles (“Kartlis Tskhovreba”, literally - The Life of Kartli), this hermitage preserved church sanctuaries and treasures, and for the monks, the hermitage was accessible via chain ladders. Ilia Chavchavadze described the legend related to the monastery in his poem "The Hermit."
According to another legend, it was to Mount Kazbegi that Amirani (Prometheus) was chained, punished for having stolen fire from the gods and giving it to humans.
