Anatori

Anatori

Anatori village is located in Khevsureti, about 3 kilometers northwest of Shatili. Here meet the roads coming from Chechnya-Ingushetia, Dagestan, Tusheti, and Kartli-Kakheti.

East of the village there are burial vaults. Archaeological excavations have uncovered wooden dishes, coins, and arrows inside. Inside the tombs, along the walls, there are two or three tiers of shelves for the dead. Several dozen people were buried in the tombs. The bones of those who had died earlier were gathered on the floor and under the shelves.

Interesting is the oral account, according to which Anatori closed off from the rest of the Khevsureti during the plague so that the disease would not spread further. Since nobody was left in the village who was able to take the dead to the burial vaults, the sick would go on their own and await the death there.
